PHMSA Announces the Award of Pipeline Safety and Hazardous Materials Safety Grants

On September 20, 2019, DOT announced the award of over $34,300,000 in awards to enhance pipeline and hazardous materials safety. A PHMSA press release explained that the grants will support states, territories, local governments, tribal entities, emergency responders, universities, and non-profit organizations, to support various state and local safety programs.

Hazardous materials safety grants included:

  • $20.6 million in Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness grants
  • $3.7 million in Hazardous Materials Instructor Training grants
  • $1.9 million in Supplemental Public Sector Training grants
  • $1.3 million in Assistance for Local Emergency Response Training grants
  • $800,000 in Community Safety grants

“Roughly one million shipments of hazardous materials are transported by various modes every single day throughout the U.S.,” said PHMSA Administrator Skip Elliott in the PHMSA press release. “Proper training, planning, and preparedness are indispensable in keeping responders and the people they protect safe.” More details are available at: https://www.phmsa.dot.gov/news/transportation-secretary-chao-announces-343-million-in-pipeline-hazmat-safety-grants.
